A client recently reached out to us after experiencing issues with a newly installed HVAC system.

They had initially hired a low-bid contractor—essentially just two guys operating out of a truck—who rushed through the installation that included two outdoor heat pumps and four indoor heads. Despite the considerable investment of about $30,000, both systems only functioned properly for about three weeks before breaking down entirely.

They attempted to hold the original company accountable, only to discover that the business had since dissolved and could not be reached, leaving them with no recourse and a costly, nonfunctional system.

Our team was called in for a diagnostic evaluation, and unfortunately, we found extensive problems with both systems.

The larger of the two systems, a 3 indoor head ductless unit, appeared to have suffered a compressor failure, which sent burnt refrigerant through the line-set.  We also confirmed multiple refrigerant leaks throughout the system, which allowed contaminants to enter the system, the real source of the problem.  When this happens, there is no way to repair this.

The second system, a single zone ductless, also showed several refrigerant leaks.  The only viable solution would have been a complete replacement of the line-set, making repairs impractical and costly with no guarantee of long-term reliability.

Once we walked the homeowner through our findings, it became clear that the issues stemmed from poor installation practices and substandard workmanship.

We’ve installed a new, professionally engineered system for them (pictures above), and they are now enjoying reliable comfort and peace of mind, something they never had with the previous installation.
