On March 28, 2024, Washington legislators successfully passed their Clean Lighting Bill (HB 1185), which begins their elimination of fluorescent lighting technology. The bill will prohibit the sale or distribution of all CFLs and linear fluorescent tubes beginning January 1, 2029.

Removing Fluorescent lights with a Commercial Lighting Upgrade

Washington state is phasing out fluorescent lighting, starting with high-CRI linear fluorescent lamps in 2023 and banning all compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and linear fluorescent tubes in 2029. The ban is intended to reduce energy use and toxic mercury.

Benefits of the fluorescent ban:

• Washingtonians could save $37 million annually on utility bills by 2035.
• The ban could avoid 32,000 metric tons of carbon pollution.
• The ban could avoid taking approximately 7,000 gas powered vehicles off the road every year.

How to prepare for the ban:

• Work with us to create a photometric plan to ensure consistent light throughout a space.
• Validate that light level standards are met.
• Ensure that LED upgrades use the least amount of energy possible.

Both Snohomish County PUD and Puget Sound energy are offering rebates on these lighting upgrades.  Additional utility rebates (and energy savings) are also offered for combining LED lighting with occupancy sensors.  Evergreen State electrical Services can also track and monitor lighting performance remotely through Pelican controls (which has the bonus of also tracking HVAC equipment performance).
